Beaumont EMS workers got a big win this week as a district judge ruled that the city needs to classify them as civil service employees and not civilians.
Although the EMS division was absorbed by Beaumont Fire and Rescue in 2021, the city still considers them civilians, 12 News Now reported.
"EMS is about 80% of what a firefighter does," Local 399 president Jeff Nesom said, adding that they should be considered civil servants.
As civilians, they work under a different pay structure with fewer benefits.
"Our firefighters right now are riding those ambulances and responding on ambulances right now, just as they are. Aand we believe that they should be treated the same way as us," Nesom said.
City of Beaumont spokesperson Tracy Kennick said: "The city is disappointed by the recent court order. At this time, we're considering all avenues before committing to an appeal."
The union points to Texas Government Code Chapter 143 which says, "an employee of the fire department whose primary duties are to provide emergency medical services is considered to be a firefighter."
"Why are they disappointed that their employees should receive fair benefits and fair treatment. Because that's all the firefighters have been asking for -- is fair treatment to all of their employees of the Beaumont Fire Department," Nesom said.
